Bob Devereux
“… a revered gallery owner, acclaimed poet, librettist, performer and elder of the town’s artistic community, Devereux looks outward and inward, a bold voyager of the imagination…”
Bob Devereux, who came to St Ives in the Sixties runs the Salthouse Gallery and is one of the leading lights of the St Ives artistic community. He is a poet, artist, librettist, poetry event organizer (St Ives Festival and Cafe Frug), Arvon writing course tutor, is a well known figure in St Ives and has run his own gallery for many years.
Bob Devereux is very aware of the power of metaphor and he enjoys the possibility of the simple shapes which can morph and have more than one meaning.
When painting he regards the canvas as a slice of air into which he can float his shapes. Only the edge is real. Colour is important to him, but so is line and the speed of line. He enjoys the physicality of paint. When he was thirteen a teacher called Miss Rolat encouraged him to paint with his fingers. He has never forgotten that moment.
He believes that all art survives on its mysteries rather than its explanations and in this respect he is an abstract expressionist.
