Poldark, Locations and Video
So with all the hype surrounding Poldark and Cornwall’s starring role in it, I thought I’d write a short post to highlight where you can see the wonderful backdrops and how you can get to them from Trereife. So move over Doc Martin! West Cornwall will now be a tough competitor when it comes to fans flocking to The Duchy.
Botallack Mine - 20 minutes
Botallack is a short drive from Trereife, just after St. Just on the scenic B3306 road (ultimately ending at St. Ives). The mine is really an iconic image of Cornwall’s industrial heritage. The two main engine houses are very striking, sitting so close to the edge of the North Coast and the Atlantic. The Gurnard’s head pub is very close, and undoubtedly one of the best pubs in Cornwall.

Gunwalloe Cove- 50 mins
Gunwalloe cove means cliffs of hell and was heavily used by wreckers to lure ships in order to plunder their riches. Gunwalloe is a beautiful setting, and The Lizard peninsula is a fantastic day trip. Kynance Cove and Falmouth (university town) are also great to visit.
Porthgwarra Beach - 20 mins
Now would be a good time to mention that I well and truly got the bug for acting when Summer In February was being filmed at Trereife. I jumped at the chance of being an extra in Poldark and I spent many hours at Porthgwarra watching a very daring escape (not going to give any more away!). It is a stone’s throw from Porthcurno and The Minack Theatre (also a great attraction). The beach itself is absolutely gorgeous, with a cafe and garden to sit and enjoy.
St Agnes Head - 35 mins
Part of the Poldark estate, this magical area is another part of Cornwall with it’s own unique identity and character. The mines and wildlife are the main draws, while the beaches are some of the best in Cornwall, with surfing being an important sport in the area.
Enough with the talking, we’ve been very lucky to have a proactive tourist board in Visit Cornwall who’ve made a great video to show you what we have to offer.
