Expressive Painting @ Newlyn School of Art

The aim of this inspiring course is to free up preconceptions of painting and drawing through play and experimentation to create large scale expressive works on paper and canvas. Students will explore a variety of methods in painting and drawing, allowing a personal language to develop through reaction to the local landscape, working from the life model and still life. The course covers the application of paint with brushes, palette knives, hands etc, whilst considering different approaches to mark making, composition, mood, energy, surface, narrative and tonality. A variety of materials will be experimented with including oils, acrylics, charcoal, pencil, mixed media and watercolour.

Introduction to Printmaking @ Newlyn School of Art

This stimulating course offers beginners and those with limited experience of printmaking the opportunity to explore a wide range of printing techniques over two days. The teaching will be made up of both hands-on training and demonstrations. Techniques will include mono-printing with a press, intaglio and relief collagraph printing, drypoint and carborundum. The course gives an excellent overview of many printing methods and processes with the exception of etching which is covered in a specific four day course offered by Newlyn School of Art. We also offer a separate two day course on collagraph printmaking.

Exploring the Cornish Garden @ Trewidden Gardens

This wonderful two day course explores the dynamic beauty of a Cornish sub-tropical garden, in both macro and micro scale. The course focuses on encouraging new ways of looking and responding to the surroundings using a range of creative processes – drawing and watercolour, mono-printing, working with found natural materials, uses of text and gathering of textures from the garden.

Day 1 – Tutor lead projects.

Day 2 – Opportunity to develop own work and explore different areas of the garden.

Please note that included in the cost of this course is an extra range of papers and materials provided by the school and available for students to work with throughout the course.

This exciting three day course is suitable for those with some experience of painting with oils. Meeting at Newlyn School of Art, initial teaching will include an overview on the preparation of boards and canvases and an understanding of the tools and materials associated with oil painting moving on to the application of paint with brush and palette knife. Weather permitting most of the work will take place outside in the working fishing harbour of Newlyn.

Trereife Christmas Gift Fair 2011

The historic Queen Anne manor house and its spectacular grounds is sure to prove an atmospheric venue for visitors to soak up a heady dose of festive spirit, while picking up some unique Cornish gifts.

The weekend event begins on the evening of Friday 18th November with a fundraiser for the BBC Children In Need. The park and house will be lit by the Newlyn Harbour lights creating a magical atmosphere, whilst local school choirs, singer songwriters and a traditional brass band provide the entertainment. The night is set to offer a fantastic evening shopping atmosphere with local food produce, designer crafts and working craft demonstrations.

Inside the house, the Le Grice family will be offering free access to some of their historic rooms, where visitors can hear about the fascinating history of Trereife and it’s local area. The evening culminates in a magical lantern parade by local school children followed by choirs and fundraising activities. All proceeds from the fundraising will go to Children In Need and the Newlyn Lights Appeal who will be providing the atmospheric lighting. Throughout the weekend the Craft Fair will take place all under cover in heated marquees where visitors can browse a range of quality art and craft. A selection of local suppliers will be on hand to tickle your taste buds, making it the perfect opportunity to stock up on an array of fine foods and drinks for the festive season.

Trereife’s Courtyard Cafe will also be serving a selection of homemade refreshments. Entertainment across will include a programme of live music with the Hayle Town Band, Newlyn Male Choir, The Blazing Heart Chorus as well as singer-songwriter Johnny English.

A free Christmas craft workshop will ensure there’s plenty to occupy younger visitors including a traditional fairground carousel and Mister Cool Magic the Magician. Complete with Blacksmithing, woodcarving and basket making workshops and the great smells of seasonal food, the event is set to be a joy for the senses for both the young and young at heart.

The event will be open from 5pm- 8pm on Friday 18th and 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Admission for adults is £3, children £1 and under 5s free of charge.
