Show dates: 25th April- 13th May

Painter Liz Cleves is staging her first exhibition in Penwith at Trereife House. Being from Penzance the opportunity to show work on her home soil constitutes a special moment in time.

Her work is largely semi-representational in style but with an emphasis in working towards greater abstraction. Each new series of paintings begins with a semi-representational piece that includes traditional elements of colour and form. Following pieces emerge with a focus on architectural forms and patterns within landscape and built structures. In each work a point is reached when exploration of colour, form, line and texture (for their own sakes) takes over.

Although much of her work emanates from studies of and responses to Cornwall, she finds inspiration (and a different palette!) as a result of foreign travel. She gains further inspired from iconic artists such as Georgia O’Keefe, Ben Nicholson and Bryan Wynter; from the music of John Cage; from contemporary dance theatre.

Her work is a personal response to the properties of oils, watercolours and mixed media; and to themes that convey mood and atmosphere.
