Cornwall Design Fair (16th- 18th September 2016)
The Cornwall Design Fair is one of The Duchy’s largest design fairs, attracting designers, exhibitors and artists from all over Cornwall.
The inaugural design fair took place in 2006 at Godolphin House, when Hidden Art Cornwall selected 65 renowned designer-makers to showcase their creations. The seeds were sown, and a few years later, in 2008, more than 80 exhibitors were in attendance.
In 2009, the first ‘proper’ Cornwall Design Fair filled the gardens and courtyards at Trereife Park with the event expanding on a much larger scale. Soon, more than 3,500 visitors were enjoying the sights and atmosphere of what was becoming one of the most-anticipated events in Cornwall art calendar.
With the increasing popularity of the fair, more exhibition space was added. A curated design showcased the work of seven designers in the rooms of Trereife House, alongside a mixed exhibition of local artists in the main gallery. The Courtyard Café held a photographic exhibition. In 2011, entertainment was provided for children as well as music, workshops and demonstrations. A number of specialist food outlets were invited to compliment the menu of the Courtyard Café. Last year more than 90 designer-makers took part in the event, which attracted over 4,000 visitors.
This year, the beautiful formal gardens of the early 18th century Trereife House will be transformed into a design paradise, with specialist food stalls, local musicians and huge marquees housing the best young and established designer-makers and their wares.
Inside the marquees and outside in the garden visitors will find an endearing array of ceramics, glass, jewellery, fashion accessories, furniture, lighting, prints and textiles, all of which can be bought or commissioned direct from the designer-makers, with everything from earrings to birdfeeders on offer.
As well as enjoying the designer shopping experience, visitors can take cream tea in the Courtyard Café and walk among the clipped parterre gardens and along yew-lined pathways and walled gardens bordered by wisteria and agapanthus. There will also be live entertainment and special design-led activities for children, as well as workshops and demonstrations.
Visitors are also offered a fascinating glimpse of the interior of the historic house, where they will find the ‘curated design’ section of the fair – in which selected designer-makers have been tasked with creating a harmonious mix of contemporary design and the classic historic setting.
Cornwall Design Fair has become a unique opportunity to find out Cornwall’s esteemed artists and craftspeople approach their work, and discover first hand the inspiration behind each piece. The event epitomises the essence of design quality and creativity, making it the place to go for innovative and beautiful items for your home and for yourself.
